In the Late Post-Classic Maya mythology of the Popol Vuh, Camazotz is a bat spirit at the service of the lords of the underworld (Xibalba). Camazotz means "death bat" in the Kʼicheʼ language, he was a large, leaf-nosed bat with a human-like form. In Mesoamerica generally, the bat is often associated with night, death, and sacrifice. A bat-like deity was first mentioned by the indigenous Zapotec people of Mexico around 100 C.E.
