This necklace is inspired by one of the most beautifully engraved horse coins of the ancient Greek world—a silver didrachm struck in the prosperous city of Pantikapaion (Panticapaeum), located on the shores of the Black Sea in what is now Kerch, Crimea. Minted during the late 3rd century BC, the original coin reflects the remarkable artistry and craftsmanship for which Greek engravers were renowned.
The reverse of the coin portrays a horse peacefully grazing, its natural posture captured with extraordinary realism. Beneath its hooves, delicate blades of grass emerge from the ground, while the inscription ΠΑΝΤΙ (PANTI) identifies the issuing city, Pantikapaion. The quiet elegance of the design stands in contrast to the more heroic imagery often found on ancient coinage, celebrating instead the beauty, strength, and harmony of the natural world.
For the ancient Greeks, the horse represented courage, freedom, nobility, and endurance. It was a trusted companion in war, travel, sport, and mythology, making it one of the most admired animals of antiquity. The grazing horse also conveys abundance, peace, and a deep connection between humanity and nature.
Each pendant begins as an original sculpture that I hand carve in my Florida studio before kiln-firing it to create a lasting bronze piece. Rather than casting directly from an existing coin, I carefully recreate every detail by hand, honoring the artistry of the ancient engraver while creating a unique work of wearable art. Every pendant is individually finished and signed on the back.
Whether worn as a symbol of strength and freedom or treasured as a connection to the ancient Greek world, this necklace celebrates a timeless masterpiece of classical numismatic art.

A meaningful gift for lovers of ancient history, Greek culture, archaeology, horses, and timeless symbols of Freedom. This small coin pendant connects the wearer to a story that has endured for more than 2,400 years.
Bronze has been valued since antiquity for its strength and warm, golden tone. Over time, it naturally oxidizes—much like silver—creating a rich patina that adds depth and character. Its original luster can be easily restored with a jeweler’s polishing cloth as needed.
