Thalia also spelled Thaleia, was one of the Muses, the goddess who presided over comedy and idyllic poetry. In this context her name means "flourishing", because the praises in her songs flourish through time. She was portrayed holding a comic mask and holding a shepherd staff.
The Greek muses were the patron goddesses of the arts of the realms of human spiritual activity, including poetry, art, and the sciences. It was thought that the Muses inspired poets and artists.
