Hound dog coin necklace, a hand-Carved Bronze Replica of a Sicilian Didrachm, Circa 415–410 BC.

Carry a piece of ancient Sicily with this handcrafted necklace inspired by a rare Greek silver didrachm from Panormos, the ancient city that became modern-day Palermo. The coin's design features a sleek hunting hound standing alert, surrounded by the Greek inscription ΠΑΝΟΡΜΟΣ (PANORMOS).

I individually hand-carved this piece from my original sculpture and kiln-fired it in my Florida studio using traditional artisan techniques. The result is a wearable artifact that captures the beauty and character of an ancient coin while preserving the marks of hand craftsmanship.

In the ancient world, hunting dogs were admired for their loyalty, intelligence, endurance, and unwavering devotion. They served as trusted companions and skilled protectors, making them enduring symbols of faithfulness, courage, and purposeful pursuit.

Historical Inspiration

This design is based on an authentic silver didrachm struck in Panormos, Sicily, around 415–410 BC, during the height of Greek influence in the Mediterranean. The original coin is preserved in the Münzkabinett der Staatlichen Museen (Coin Cabinet of the Berlin State Museums) and is housed in the Altes Museum, Berlin, Germany.

Bronze has been valued since antiquity for its strength and warm, golden tone. Over time, it naturally oxidizes—much like silver—creating a rich patina that adds depth and character. Its original luster can be easily restored with a jeweler’s polishing cloth as needed.
