Hand carved Tonantzin necklace.
Tonanzin is an Aztec goddess and in the Nahuatl language means "Our Mother".
Such Goddesses as "Mother Earth", the "Goddess of Sustenance", "Honored Grandmother", "Snake", "Bringer of Maize" and "Mother of Corn" can all be called Tonantzin, as it is an honorific title comparable to "Our Lady" or "Our Great Mother". Under the name of “Cihuacoatl” “The Serpent Woman”, this goddess also served as a protector of women. The goddess, was very venerated by the natives. According to testimonies, she appeared to one of them at a time in the form of a young girl in a white robe, and revealed secret things to the person.
